5 out of 5 stars cooks very well   July 7, 2007

I have used this to make pork steaks once and I was very pleased. They stuck a little, but that was my fault as I forgot to spray it beforehand. I made these according to a recipe from the scouts with onion, carrots, potatoes, etc. and was just wonderful. Look forward to using this a lot and for making a camp cobbler which I learned to make in the scouts as well.

Perfect size for our camping adventures. The Handle is sturdy enough. good price for brand, I've seen them much more expensive online and in retail stores.

5 out of 5 stars 5 qt Dutch Oven   April 22, 2007

This is a "great" pot but a little heavy. The food tastes great cooked in it and it is so easy to use and clean.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to cook!   February 18, 2007

As long as you keep the Dutch Oven seasoned, it is wonderful to cook in. I use mine several times a week. The lid is wonderful - the way it fits. Stews, chili, beans all turn out great. The 5 quart is a good size for a small family. However, you might want to go up to the 7-quart for more than 4 in a family. Lodge sells it where it is now pre-seasoned so you don't have to do anything to get it started. Just keep it well maintained, which is very easy to do. Everytime I use it I wash it in hot water and dry it with paper towels, because a dish towel will pick up the black color. Then on the paper towel I put a little vegetable oil and rub it all over the inside of the pot. That makes it ready for the next use. Very easy.

5 out of 5 stars Kitchen must-have   February 12, 2007

I've got a couple of camp dutch ovens & skillet for camping and love them. Based on that, I decided to switch to cast iron for the house and have a variety of skillets. I needed a sauce pot for the house. This DO is absolutely perfect and extremely versatile. I cook everything from macaroni to tomato soup in it as well as reheating leftovers and cooking small roasts. We have a family of 5 and it holds plenty for us. I haven't used my faithful stainless cookware since buying the cast iron. There's nothing better than cast iron to cook in. However, you do have to take care of it properly. You can't leave it in the sink over night with liquid in it or it will rust.

If you're thinking about adding cast iron to your kitchen, I highly recommend this DO and a 10" skillet as essential starters. You'll not regret it.
