5 out of 5 stars Great unit for the first time buyer... I am proof   April 11, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

First, let me say I am a 39 year old male, who in the past, would have rather had a cold diet coke in the morning, more than any cup of coffee of any sort. Well, after my co-workers finally got me hooked on the cappuccinos from the coffee shop next door, I decided to take the bull by the horns, and buy me my own machine.

After feeling just alittle trepadacious while unpacking my new fancy coffee machine, and my wife thinking I had gone off my rocker, I got the unit cleaned up and ready to go.

Cutting to the chase, after a week, I am darned proud of my abilities now. The machine works flawlessly for my uses, I cant wait for people to come over, so I can surprise them, by offering them a cappuciino? Expresso? My wife has even started drinking them, she loves a single espresso shot with steamed milk, and powdered chocolate on top.

The secrets I have learned so far, is be sure to use skim milk if you like lots of froth. Also, be sure to steam the milk long enough, I finally used a cooking thermometer to show me where 160 degrees was ( I hadnt been steaming long enough, and the froth just wasnt happening).
And after buying a couple of different bottles of flavoring (caramel and vanilla) from my local grocery haven, I am as happy as a pig in slop.

Price for the machine couldnt have been better. The only thing so far I would have liked to have, is alittle longer steaming wand (since my cups seem to be HUGE and the nozzle doesnt reach down far enough sometimes), but I guess I could use smaller cups !

So, if you are like me, and this is your first time buying a machine, take the plunge with this one... I'm glad I did.

4 out of 5 stars Lovi'n the mochas!   March 31, 2008
This brand beats the Mr. Coffee espresso machine I just threw away! It brews so much faster with a pump! I also have figured out that if I purchase the Starbuks espresso pod and also the Starbucks Cocoa Powder mix, I get a drink that is as close to the real Starbucks Mocha Latte drink as I can get without spending tons of money on a machine.

I am very happy with this product. I like frothing the milk before brewing as other reviews have suggested.

4 out of 5 stars Makes great cappuccinos!   March 28, 2008
I've had this thing for awhile now and I just have to come back and say how happy I am with it. I JUST recently got a nice conical burr grinder for my fresh Starbucks espresso beans and let me tell you I have pulled a perfect crema/body/heart shot today! I found that the grind setting is most important to getting that pressure to build up and make a great shot so if you don't grind it right it won't come out right.

First, tamp the grounds down as hard as possible, then press the brew button until water JUST starts to come out and put the basket under the machine so you don't get as much air in there (not sure it helps but in my mind it does).

Sure, I also use Illy's pre-ground espresso coffee and they grind it quite finely and I have made some good shots with that too. The only problem with Illy is the clock starts ticking the second you open that can and the coffee slowly but surely loses its luster. Now, I can grind my own fresh beans at the right fineness every morning.

I only drink cappuccinos and after the heat light turns out I clear the line of water and when it's just steam I put the milk under and it heats up all the milk to my fav temp of about 165 degrees. Add a nice caramel sauce and you've got a great drink!!!

The only negative I have is that when I first got it the plastic parts smelled bad, but that goes away after a period of use. I was considering buying a more expensive machine, but now that my grinder is better and makes a finer grind I am getting better results than ever and I'll hold onto this thing for as long as it works I think!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this machine!!!   March 28, 2008
After much research I choose this machine and could not be happier. I was initially concerned since it is a bottom priced pump maker but it is a giant step up from a steam espresso maker. I will never go back. I would recommend this maker to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price.   March 27, 2008
This is pretty good for the price. Makes a good cup of espresso. My only problmes really are 1. it dosen't make a Crema' on top that I love so much, and 2. the wand is so low on it, you need to use a small ceramic mug, no frothing pitcher is going to fit under that. Over all, for the money its great!
