My old one was rusted but serviceable. I bought this one at a very low price with free shipping.

I was surprised it is of a higher quality than the original. Thicker wire, heavier stainless steel coating.

Don't smoke without it May 27, 2006
My wife is skeptical about my need to purchase yet another grill (I have 4 already), and I was disappointed with the results I was getting from my Brinkman barrel-type smoker, I decided to try smoking on my venerable 9 year old Weber kettle. Heat and smoke management was much easier in my opinion, but getting fresh coals on to the pile was difficult, as you either need to lift the grate (difficult with 15 pound of porcine goodness on the other side), or content yourself with dropping the pieces through the gap. My results were very good the first time around using the standard grate but were spectacular after using the hinged grate. (easier and faster, with much less heat loss.) I agree with the reviewer who suggested that this be the dafault grate. Now I need to design a lid that minimizes heat loss when adding fuel!

Well, not much to say about this item. It's obviously very functional and I'm left wondering why Weber doesn't just make this the defacto grate for all of it's kettles.

It's rock solid steel, quite hefty for it's size I'd say. The hinges are well made and it's quite useful for long-term indirect cooking. Good for party BBQs as well, since you often run low on fuel cooking a lot of meat.

I only have one complaint and since it's not really a product failure, I'm giving 5 stars: The thing needs it's own box to ship in. Mine came in a 4'x3'x2' (1.3m x 1m x .7m) cardboard box with enough airbags to choke a dozen donkeys. Get a grip Weber and give this to your suppliers in a form fitted box so the environment doesn't have to suffer!
