4 out of 5 stars NOT for use in CANNING   August 19, 2008

According to Presto, this 8-qt. cooker is NOT suitable for canning, because the last time testing was done for canning times in this size cooker was 30 years ago, and changes in scientific knowledge and in the types/acidity, etc., of vegetables make those times out-of-date and unsuitable for safe canning.

So . . . this is NOT a canner. Presto says the smallest canner they sell now is the 16-qt.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Pressure Cooker   August 15, 2008

Presto 8-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker is perfect for the mid size family. We bought 1 for ourselves and liked it so much that we bought 2 more as gifts for family members. Priced at about $79., however with $30. back from Amazon, we only paid only $39.00 for our last purchase. Either way a great deal!
The last Pressure we had was also a Presto and that lasted for as long as I can remember...over 20 years. This one is sooo much better and everything just comes out perfectly. My wife is the cook in our family and she swears that not only does it cook fast and perfect, but it's also easy to handle and design of the handle makes it easy to lift and store. My sister-in-laws who got them as gifts, also concur with my wife's sentiments. We would consider buying this product again.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further than this cooker   August 10, 2008

This cooker is a great value for the money and is helping us to prepare inexpensive, delicious meals very quickly. It is very durable and cleans quickly; if you're thinking of saving a few $ by getting an aluminum pot, please don't- stainless steel is a much better way to go.

5 out of 5 stars does what it says   August 6, 2008

This is a quality item. Has a stainless basket and trivet inside and cooks beautifully. I bought it because I wanted to change from aluminum to stainless cookware, but was cautious about whether it would heat and cook as well as the aluminum. I was very pleased indeed with its performance. The bi-clad base is the key because the aluminum inside the two layers of stainless steel transfers the heat evenly. Using enough water for cooking, avoiding too high heat, and being careful not to run the cooker dry will avoid damage to the base. I am very pleased with this item.

4 out of 5 stars My new pressure cooker   July 18, 2008

Seems this product is sold in two different versions of packaging, one with a red box and one with a blue box. The only difference I could tell between the two is the included manual/recipe book. The red box issue comes with a larger recipe book than the blue box version. I could not tell if there was a difference of construction between the two version...if there is one. They are both made in China. I have also noticed this product is also sold under the De Longhi name.

The construction and finish of the product upon delivery was flawless. The cooker has so far performed as expected. However, cleaning with a brillo pad left small scratches on the bottom of the cooker. This is strange because I have several stainless steel commercial cookware and they are able to sustain a good amount of brillo pad action. We'll see what happens as I continue to use this, but this is a bit concerning. My last concern is the rubber gasket, and if I will be able to purchase this part several years from now should I need one.

I wish this thing came with a pressure gauge, because during use it is difficult to judge the difference between a slow to medium steady stream of steam. At this price range, purchasing a stainless steel cooker at this size with a gauge is almost impossible. I hope that some day presto can come up with an enhanced attachment replacement for this unit. I have not tried canning yet.
