2 out of 5 stars Good Grip - Too Short on Business End   October 6, 2004
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

I've broken a few corks with this tool, as the "worm" doesn't reach the bottom of some corks. Other foil cutters are easier to use. Like most OXO tools, this one feels comnfortable and steady in the hand. If you're opening an older bottle or one that has a particularly long cork, use another corkscrew.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality value.   August 29, 2004

This is a sturdy, handy, and small corkscrew that also comes equipped with a bottle opener and a foil cutter. Its size is excellent to keep at home or to take on picnics and trips, and its corkscrew has a sharp point that goes into all kinds of corks without breaking them, even the really old ones. Its bottle opener is very easy to use, and its foil cutter, a couple of wheels with sharp edges recessed into the screw's handle, although requiring some practice, offers a clean, safe alternative to the traditional rusty knife.
Like the rest of the products from the OXO Good Grips line, this one is a great value of superior quality, unsurpassed durability and flawless performance. Its ergonomic design and big, pressure-absorbing, outstanding non-slip grip, allow you comfortable, daily, wet or dry use, and it's elegant, stylized shape makes it perfect to move back and forth between the kitchen and the dinner table.
Its easy-to-clean, simple construction and dishwasher-safe, hard-wearing materials make this a tool that you will be able to depend on for years, and its stainless-steel metal parts will permanently keep your rust worries away.
After submitting this product to over two years of normal everyday use, mine is still just like new.

3 out of 5 stars Perfect Quality, Poor Design   June 16, 2004

I am a bartender and I work with this OXO for 3 month now. You dont want to know how many times i stung myself with this needle - eh - cork screw. Band-aid became my second best friend.
I partly agree to previous comments: I miss a small knife instead of the foil cutter. Although the cutter itself works okay, unless you need to open waxed bottle tops

I like the feel and sturdyness, but this is not a professional tool designed by professionals. I will buy something else today.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Low-tech Cork Puller   April 25, 2004
4 out of 8 found this review helpful

I've had this for a year and can report it's a very good, no nonsense cork puller. It's not as fancy as the rabbit pullers but then this one is good for everyday use or to throw into the picnic carrier or shaving kit for a trip away.

It does not leave cork parts in the wine. Requires some skill / patience / strength, however. The foil cutter is not the traditional knife blade but two sharp scoring edges. It works about 80% of the time (OXO: I think the edges should be sharper or bigger).

Good value and recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Very good grip and screw, poor foil cutter   December 14, 2003

The foil cutter is awkward to use: While you circle the top of the bottle, you must press the two little wheels against the foil. There is no option but to cut the foil near the top (I like to cut it below the lip), so I use a regular knife to cut the foil rather than use the OXO.

The corkscrew itself is excellent: It has a very sharp point, and screws in easily. The spirals wide enough to grip well into the cork, providing a good grip even in old corks.

The lever which rests against the bottle is positioned and sized just right (the lever does not touch the cork, nor does it slide off the bottle).

The grip has the typical OXO feel of firmness and softness, which I like. The geometry provides good leverage and easily extracts the more recalcitrant corks.

As with any waiter's helper style corkscrew, it takes care and practice to insert the screw down the middle of the cork.

Unfortunately, after a year of service, one of the small parts in the OXO broke, and now the screw and lever flop around loosely, so I can't use it anymore.
