5 out of 5 stars Can't live without it   June 24, 2003
6 out of 10 found this review helpful

This is the one appliance in my kitchen I could not live without. I use it for everything, and it has never failed me. I've had mine 17 years and it still works as good as the day I took it out of the box. I vaguely remember (it was a long time ago) using other mixers, and none can compare with ease of use or versatility.
Pros: Can mix virtually anything. I use mine mostly for bread, cookies, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, or cakes/brownies. Frosting is a snap.
Weight keeps it from bouncing around on the counter when mixing large batches of dough.
Easy to clean.
Looks. Not that I care, even if it was hideously ugly I'd keep it on my countertop, but it's not and at 17 years, mine still looks new.
Ease of use. I don't worry when my kids want to use it that a part will fly off, or they'll stick their hand in when scraping the bowl (since you don't need to scrape the bowl).
Cons: Not easy to move around, it's heavy. But look at it this way, you get a workout which makes it OK to eat what you've made.
Accessory suggestions: An extra bowl. Comes in very handy when making something that requires several stages of mixing.
The only thing you really need to think about before making this purchase is what color you like. When I bought mine, you could choose between white and beige!
Highly recommended, you will not ever regret it.
Life is short, live it up!
*My review is for an older model, but I see few differences between it and this model. This model appears to have a slightly larger motor (325 vs 300 watts) and slightly larger bowl. I'd love to have one for the color choices, but like I said, mine is still like new!

I also own an Osterizer Kitchen Center after 25+ years of use along with experiencing the motor's irregular speed fits. And also, envious of the KitchenAid reputation decided on this product 4 years ago. I very rarely use it and am thankful for my standby Oster and a Sunbeam handmixer I may have to replace soon. The KitchenAid never fully mixes the stuff on the bottom, it is difficult to scrape the sides besides having to take the time to mix the bottom, and forget trying to whip up Dream Whip topping. The motor seems to be louder and more annoying than any other appliance I have and my husband and visitors have asked, "Do they all sound like that?" But, I have talked to other owners of the smaller KitchenAid Mixers who are quite happy with the results. I did purchase a grinder attachment and am very happy with the results but I could have stuck with just my Oster. ...

5 out of 5 stars Art + Science = GREAT KITCHEN MACHINE!   June 19, 2003

My husband bought the "Empire Red" version of this for me for Mother's day. I picked it mostly because the color was intriguing (ok, I'm in to packaging). And the thing looks gorgeous in my kitchen-- my husband (ever the engineer) was impressed by its weight, all-steel construction and even commented that it was a "beautiful machine". I just thought it looked great on my counter.

Ok. Enough about the art. I do cook and I do use it. As much as possible. The machine is a joy to use. It's twice as efficient as a regular mixer (I used to have a sunbeam-- it broke), it's solid, and for heaven's sake, do NOT get in the way of that beater. It won't stop for ANYTHING. My mom has had her Kitchen Aid for 25 years, through six kids (both cooking for them and letting them use it). It's made to last.

By the way, an earlier comment about not mixing to the bottom of the bowl-- read the instructions-- there's a little screw you can adjust that will move the head up and down ever so slightly to get the beater to just touch the bottom of the bowl.

The Artisan 5 is a beautiful thing to use-- LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars All Star Mixer in a great color - Sunny Yellow! :-)   June 19, 2003
This mixer is a workhorse. It is a great resource to have to help make things easier when cooking or baking.

It is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever   June 17, 2003

For those of you who have always had to stand by your mixing bowl, holding down the turbo button on your hand mixer this is the greatest invention since the earl of sandwich sliced bread. We all have had to do it, hold the dreaded hand mixer. Not only does this product mix exceptionally well, but it can be left to mix on its own. When all is said and done the kitchenaid stand mixer will out mix, blend, or whip any other product on the market.
