I have used many cookers and this is the best of all!.
Simply great and it is an asset, do not get cheated by
the cheaper priced cooker. GOOD FOR ALL COOKING.

5 out of 5 stars swiss quality   September 9, 2002

I had the pleasure to work in Switzerland for a few years and what struct me most about this country are the high prize and high quality. Swiss cookware is no exception, Kuhn Rikon, Mivit, Solis for example. I have purchased six of these pressure cookers of different sizes and they are well worth the cost (by the way,
they cost quite a bit less in Switzerland then in the US if you know where to look, naturally, there is a much wider choice of cookware style and sizes in the country of origin). The safety feature works very well; I had the main valve stuck with food and the secondary valve worked as it should; also taking apart the main valve to clean is very simple. It's unfortunate that the Duromatic line is not readily availble in the US, these cookware has stainless steel double wall for insulation (can keep food warm on the table for a couple of hours) and there are also pressure cookers in this line which are a pleasure to use and they look marvous on the table for serving. On last note, I am not too sure if the rubber seal on these pressure cookers can be found easily on the State side.

5 out of 5 stars The best kitchen purchase I have ever made...   June 19, 2002

This product is by far the best purchase I have made for my kitchen. I know plenty of people who own PCs (jiggle tops) but now is when I finally discovered why they loved theirs so much. I can make so many dishes in a fraction of the time! Some weekend-type meals are now weeknight meals. A stew on Tuesday night, Pot Roast on Wednesday, not a problem. Even making mashed potatoes is quick and easy. Chicken broth in 30 minutes not 2 hours.

Another important point is safety. You cannot open the cooker until it is completely de-pressurized (i.e. idiot (me) proof) and it has 2 additional escaped valves (asided from the main one) in case you accidently overpressurize it. The main reason I had not purchased a pressure cooker sooner was safety concerns (read: fear). But now, I could just kick myself for not getting one sooner.

However, I would just like to clarify 2 points:

To the reviewer that rated the pot 4 stars because of the shape: I do agree that the shape is a little ackward. It is taller than it is wide. However, I haven't had any problems with it so far. I checked the manufacturers website and the 8 liter model has the same diameter. It is just slightly taller. But this one does have 2 handles (a regular handle and a helper handle). I appreciate the long handle as it makes it easier for me to open the lid without burning myself (better leverage).

As for the reviewer who compared this cooker to a 1912 model: I really don't understand what he expects of a Pressure Cooker. The principle hasn't changed since his grandmother's era but the execution certainly has. But yes, you are still going to have to regulate the heat under the pot. Kuhn Rikon introduced this spring valve technology in 1949 so I doubt it is the same cooker his grandmother owned. The whole idea of a spring valve is that is isn't supposed to vent (as much if at all).

This is an excellent product and I have recommended it to everyone I know. Although the cost is a bit high, this is definitly one of those times when you get what you pay for!

5 out of 5 stars The best presure cooker I have ever used!   March 4, 2002

I purchased the Kuhn Rikon 7-Liter Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker because I wanted to cook the meals my father (Hungarian) had made whilst I was a child. Namely, goulash... And gee, is this a lovely item! Sure, you need to regulate the heat, so did he (and his grandma). This one is _so_ much easier though....

With this model you don't have the steaming and the hissing, moisture leaving your dinner. This baby is so _very_ quiet.. I have made so many meals with this cooker, and my wife loves it. Regulating the temerature is easy, the two bars (high and low pressure) are so very easy to read. Just adjust the heat.

I had an electric stove top first, it was harder to use with a pressure cooker. Now I have gas, and easy easy....

Of course, I needed to cook more than goulash...Great value, more than yes! Quick cooking, good cooking. Do yourself a favour, this is a great buy...

5 out of 5 stars I'm So Glad I Did!   September 1, 2001
This is my third pressure cooker and all I can say is "wow!" My second, jiggle-top, cooker broke this week and I finally decided to plunk down my money and get the "Rolls Royce" of cookers. I could kick myself that I waited this long. I just made one of my favorite recipes -- risotto with asparagus and mushrooms -- and I was amazed at how quickly the cooker came up to pressure, how securely the pressure gauge held at the second ring with the smallest of flames underneath, how easily it released the pressure, and how easily it opened once the pressure was down. Not to mention that the risotto absorbed virtually all the broth and was perfectly firm and chewy but completely done. With my old cooker, making this recipe was a struggle as there was always too much liquid left in the pot and it was so hard to open, (which is why the handle eventually broke). I'm now pouring through my pressure cooker cookbooks (love that Lorna Sass) and dreaming about all the delicious recipes I'll easily whip up this fall and winter.
