5 out of 5 stars Gram and Weber grill together   February 25, 2007
Let me begin by saying that my brother has owned a Weber for years. Every summer when I visit him up North, he grills - same grill, same great results. After reading the 105 reviews, I decided to go ahead and purchase this grill. I was concerned that I may have issues with this product being shipped but everything was in perfect condition. It was packaged very well. The hardest part in putting this together was just removing the sturdy "egg crates" from the carton that surrounded the grill. I did my homework before the grill arrived and seasoned it properly. I had no problem finding the propane (in Walmart's plumbing department.) I had no issues attaching the propane to the grill. (go to Weber's website and check FAQ's for help if needed) I have cooked steaks and chicken so far. Everything has been awesome. I did buy cooking spray for the grate but read that it is better to spray the food instead of the grate. I can't say enough about this grill. My kids laugh at me because the portability of this grill has made it part of my "emergency preparedness" stock. The next time a hurricane comes through, if I'm not grilling in the backyard due to loss of electricity inside, I'll be hauling it in the back of my SUV as we evacuate. Great product!!! Price was best at Amazon with no shipping charge.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulouse Grill! Easy to use   January 21, 2007

I love how easy it is to operate and how quickly it starts, at the click of a button. The cleaning is also easy, since you just put an aluminum tray under the grill to catch the drippings. of course, you need to use the metal brush to get the sticky chicken skin or other sticky things off the grill, but that part is easy.

This is a really good size. big enough to grill for a family get together, but not too big that it takes up too much space.

we bought the cart, cover, propane tube, and a tank of propane(?) from the local hardware store(sorry I'm not sure if propane is the correct term...) and leave it all outdoors under the backyard awnings so that it's very easy access, which makes us more likely to use it.

5 out of 5 stars A near perfect grill.   January 18, 2007

OK. I was originally looking for a little portable gas grill to tailgate and camp with, and after reading reviews (here and elsewhere), I sprung for the Q 200. I paid $[...] shipped for it. The summary:

Pros:
bang for buck
fantastic heat distrubition (MUST preheat grill)
good flame control
portable yet completely usable as a backyard/deck grill (with stationary cart)
roomy
Also, it is highly rated by a "leading consumer magazine"

Cons:
expensive (relative)
heavy (especially cast iron grate)
uses the expensive 14.1 oz propane tanks (from the plumbing section), not the green "coleman" style 16.7 oz tanks.

The review:
The Q 200 slots inbetween the Q 100/120 and the Q 220 and to me, represents the best bang for your buck. The differences: The Q 220 has the temp gauge built into the lid and a *slightly* taller lid (to fit a larger roast or chicken or whatever)--not worth the extra $[...]. The Q 100 (AKA Baby Q) is smaller, doesn't come with side tables (which IMHO are handy), and is only about $[...] cheaper. The Q 120 is basically the Q 100 with side tables--smaller the Q 200 but about $[...] more expensive than I paid for the 200.

The Q 200 is an outstanding grill--appropriate for a Weber. As a portable unit, the flame isn't exactly the hottest or fastest, but it gets the job done. The grate is built so that there is a heavy "strip" of metal directly over the stainless burner tube to help distribute the heat evenly throughout the grate. Once you get the grill fired up, heat the grate for AT LEAST 10 minutes on high with the cover closed and you can get perfect sear mark on just about anything. The Q has enough range to be able to sear a steak on the high heat settings and still flame down low enough to grill a delicate filet of fish. As with all Webers, the grate does a good portion of the cooking. It's HEAVY (my guess around 20 lbs.) and holds most of the heat of the flame. Like others have said around here, it easily outweighs the rest of the grill. The grate cleans up easily with some soapy water and a light scrub with a scrub sponge (don't want to scrub too much as the porcelain enameling can chip and you want the grate somewhat "seasoned"). The burner is a standard d shaped tube made of stainless steel. Looks like a reasonably decent burner--we'll see how long it lasts. My grill came shipped with the ignitor slightly out of alignment, so I was unable to start the grill the first time around. After some adjustment (had to bend the electrode "up"), I've never had to press the ignitor more than once to get flamed up.

The grill is sturdy with an all aluminum body and a fiberglass/resin/plastic frame and side tables. The side tables fold under the lid (on top of the grate--make sure the grill is cool before you fold as not to melt them) for portability, a really cool feature. They are a bit flimsy, though. I feel comfortable with a few plates of food there, but I wouldn't lay out the entire spread out on the side tables. The Weber stainless steel Q tools stow under the right side table for portability as well. The grill is (barely) portable, weighs in around (rough estimate here) 35-40 pounds, but it will fit the back of the truck or suv for the tailgate. At home, I use it with the stationary cart and a 20 lb. tank. Been able to use it 15 times over the last 4 weeks without having to refill yet. Also, with the cart, it basically looks and feels like a full sized grill. When using portable tanks, it takes the long and skinnys, not the fat and shorts (the plumber's tanks, not the green "coleman" style ones), so it'll cost you more in the long run. There IS a way to rig it to accept the green tanks, but I'm not going to divulge that here; I'm sure you can figure it out--if not, just google it.

All in all, with a total cost of $[...] for the cart ($[...] total), I've got a great performing backyard grill that I can drag to the game with me. Not a bad deal at all.
