3 out of 5 stars Fire blows out easily, handles hurt, starter fails oneside   December 30, 2003

Cooked very well but:

(1) Even very, very mild winds puts the fire out. It's very frustrating. It is very hard for me to trust it to stay lit now, even at full blast on high (although full blast helps) unless there is no wind at all. Some things really shouldn't be cooked at full blast and to be forced to do so to increase the odds of keeping the flame on is a pain.

It is a miserable experience to discover that for the last 5 minutes all that has been happening is that your $30 of ribeye roasts are soaking up the gas after the previous 5 minutes of fire.

(2) The electric starter failed to light one side after of the grill after the first 4 uses. After cleaning, same results.

(3) This is a very heavy product because of the really good (and heavy) grill. Realistically the grill gets very icky very quick (even after heaving cleanup burning), so don't expect to be carrying it separately. Get the cart at the minimum. You will notbe carrying this thing across 250 yards of beach or park without a lot of effort.

(4) The handles are INCREDIBLY uncomfortable. They dig into your hands. I've heard this from all the employees that have dragged this thing around and I have had the same experience. What a shame.

Again, cooks well, but there was some serious lack of attention to detail. Perhaps testing was limited to cooking.

Compact enough to tailgate with, yet sturdy enough for an everyday grill.

Perfect for someone living in an apartment, or somewhere without the room for a large grill.

5 out of 5 stars Like "Buyer Beware", I got a broken shelf   November 30, 2003
The design is such that the shelves are susceptible to breaking during shipping. I'm not sure about Amazon's policy of obtaining spare parts, but I got mine from ABT and they ordered a replacement shelf for me.

I fired it up last night for a BBQ party and it worked great - however, I can't find a decent price on the adapter hose, so I stocked up on $1.50 propane bottles.

5 out of 5 stars One HOT grill   November 27, 2003

This grill out cooks any of the portable "griddles" out there. Your food is grilled on a grate that browns not a griddle that boils your food. The thermal mass of the grate, although a bit heavy but for a reason, grills your food like the bigger gas grills only with less fuel. I love my Weber. There are cars and there are Caddys ... There are grills and there are Webers =:0)~

1 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE OF SHIPPING BREAKAGE!!   November 24, 2003

I am a loyal amazon customer but in the case of the Q I feel they have really let me down.

I ordered 1 Weber Q. It came to me via free shipping UPS. One of the plastic foldout shelves had broken completely off the body of the grill. So, I returned the grill and requested a replacement. Amazon shipped this one to me via Fedex-- when I opened the box it was again broken *in exactly the same way* as the first. So I decided to take a close look at how it is packed to ship.

The grill comes partially assembled. The lid is not attached at the hinges and basically floats free under the top of the box and over the shelves which are folded in. When pressure is place on the top of the packed box it directly places pressure on the shelves-- they act as levers against their anchors on the frame of the grill and break away. My suspicion is that Weber never really intended this packaging for mass mail ordering- rather it was intended to go on commercial trucks stacked one Weber on top of another out to stores.

Lastly, because after I received 2 broken in a row I have decided to get a refund and buy a Q at my local hardware store.
But, Amazon has notified me that they will charge me for shipping the returns back to them because I have requested a refund. I also can't get anyone to listen about the packaging issue. 2 different carriers managed to break it in exactly the same way!

I am now considering just requesting replacements until one comes unbroken or they get tired of paying to have them shipped back and forth.

The Q seems like a great product-- I just strongly advise you to go to your local hardware store and buy it!

UPDATE JAN 16

I finally got my refund from Amazon. They never got the second grill back -- but they believed that I had shipped it-- I think it was either swiped at UPS or their returns system got confused because I had returned 2 of the same thing. Anyway, they gave me my money backy. I went to the local hardware store and bought one. It was 25.00 more than Amazon price. I had used it twice and it is a great grill-- heats evenly, cleans well. I will be curious to see how durable it is long term.
