5 out of 5 stars A Geek-out Dream Come True   September 22, 2004

If your house is uncluttered (i.e. no papers all over the floor), and you can nail down or hide speaker cables and lamp cords, and you don't have fringey area rugs, this thing will clean your whole house and plug itself back into the power supply to recharge when it's done.

It's that awesome.

If you're a geek, or a hacker at heart, you'll find yourself staring at the thing for hours trying to reverse engineer the algorithm.

My wife never thought she'd get me to nail down those speaker cables or show an interest in vacuuming. But Roomba has made it so.

It's a toy for geeky boys. And way way cheaper than a Segway.

4 out of 5 stars Loyal Roomba User forever   September 21, 2004

I've the Roomba and Roomba Pro on their early release and have those Roomba get fix/replace every 4 months when they still under warranty.
Yes when it works it works great, when it's not working there's no way you can fix it for the major problem.
Here's some of my experience for the new discovery model:
1. Sucking power-10(almost 2x more than the old model)
2. Noisy level-7(Still generate a little noisy, you can't sleep with that turning on).
3. Docking function-8(yeah it will dock more often while I found a good spot for it however still miss 2-3 times).
4. Battery level-9(almost 1.5-2x more juicy than the old model, still not good enough to cover the whole house). And the charger is super quick while I charge it for 30 minutes it can run almost 35 minutes, now I can use it to vacuum 2-3 times a day.
5. Remote Control-5(never use it, never works for me, the roomba never go straight on my floor).
6. Durable-8(not sure how long it can last, use for 15+ times still not a single problem yet).
7. Dust Bin-10(2x bigger, hold 2x dust and the new design make it easy to clean).
8. Handling-5(it's missing the handle design from the old verion, I need to grap the whole roomba instead of pick it up using the handling, The Designer must forget that is super useful).
9. Ease of Use-8(however compare to the previous version, it did get stuck on certain area while the old one never stuck)
10. Overall-8(there's some improvement can be done before this version release, o well I'll wait for the next version).

5 out of 5 stars Long Time Roomba User Extremely Happy with New Version   September 13, 2004

I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. [...] I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.

I hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Carpet that looks freshly cleaned!   September 6, 2004
56 out of 59 found this review helpful

2 weeks ago I gave my sister the Roomba Discovery for her birthday. She is a clean freak. My sister could not stop raving about her Roomba, so I finally gave in and bought one for myself. This is no toy or gadget. I used an Oreck to clean my carpets and then put the Roomba Discovery to work. That first time the amount of dirt recovered was unbelievable and the carpet was visibly cleaner. With the exception of stains, the carpet looked like it had just been cleaned by my professional carpet cleaner.
I have now had the Roomba for a few days. It cleans the living/dining room while I sleep and then charges itself, so that it is ready to go when I get up in the morning. It is quiet enough that it can clean a room while I watch television.
Tips for a new user: it is much easier to clean up if you buy a canister of the compressed air used to clean computer keyboards. You may need to find the best place to position the home base to get it to recharge itself. You may need to Roomba-proof each room before first use, pushing power cords out of the way and removing other small loose items.
I am not a clean freak, but even to me it is amazing that after three cleanings my carpets look so very very much better than after use of a top-of-the-line standard vacuum cleaner.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Useful Device   September 6, 2004

The new "Discovery" model Roomba works fine on bare wooden floors and in rooms without a lot of furniture clutter (this is my situation). It is especially useful for going under beds and sofas.

Presently the only way a robotic vacuum can be affordable is to keep its onboard "intelligence" quite low. The Roomba cannot map a room, so it goes over the same areas four or five times. This produces impressively thorough cleaning, albeit at a very slow pace. Furthermore, it bumps harmlessly into furniture and other objects.

Overall I am glad that I got my Roomba. It has replaced using my regular vacuum for mid-week touch-up jobs, but I still need to vacuum manually inside closets and other tight spaces.

Roomba "Discovery" is more than a toy but less than a total replacemnt for a conventional vacuum. Its potential is enormous. Five years from now it will doubtless have evolved into a really impressive device.
