2 out of 5 stars Neat gimmick but not useful   January 12, 2008

I've lived with the roomba for a year now and even though I was initially impressed, my wife and I have come to the conclusion that it is not more useful than a quality vacuum cleaner. The rooma unfortunately does not return to the dock reliably, battery life is quite short on carpet, the unit gets stuck very easily and worst of all it is messy and annoying to clean. Cleaning is truly a nightmare. If you have carpeted areas that the roomba cleans, you will be constantly picking through every part of the bottom, removing clumps of fibers and hair from all over the roller brush, grate, wheels, all over. It really was harder to prepare our rooms by picking up every wire, piece of paper etc and then clean the roomba afterwards than it was to simply vacuum with a good vacuum cleaner.

5 out of 5 stars A neat freaks ideal toy   January 5, 2008
I've had a Roomba for a few years. I love it. I've given it as a gift, and the receipient also adores it. First, it is a neat "science" toy. It's fascinating watching it figure out how to navigate different objects, walls, dogs, cats, etc. Secondly, it is extremely handy when you have one of those surprise unexpected visits from guest at the last second. You can start it, then move on to other activities. If you forget about it, and it is still running when the guest arrive, it's a great conversation piece! People find it fascinating. It IS a bit of a hassle to keep the brushes clean, but the fact that it gets under beds, couches, book cases, chairs, makes that pale in comparison the maintenance aspact. If you have pets, and want to keep the house free of pet hair, this is another reason to consider purchasing it. You'll have to empty the bin daily, but heck, which is worse? Hair on your floors and carpet, or having it vacuumed up while you watch a video or read a book? Very cool gadget. Seriously fun.

so far this product is everything it says it is. Works like described right out of the box.

1 out of 5 stars Dismal quality, and poor support despit good initial impression - no longevity on this one   December 27, 2007

I bought one discovery 4210 white back in March of 2007. The first 2 months, it worked great. It did the cleaning better than I expected - it can go to the bottom of the coach to clean up cat fur. The family had fun too, they even call the Roomba with my last name then Roomba.

But the honeymoon soon ended, with the unit having a sudden stop with 3 beeping sound. You have to press the clean button to resume the cleaning. The whole purpose of getting a roomba is that it does cleaning automatically. Now we are back to manual labor - everytime it stops, you press the "clean" button.

I have contacted iRobot support, they promised to get a new dust bin for me, but it was in short supply. I waited 3 months till I got a dust bin.

Yes, after 3 months of waiting, the new dust bin did make it to work continuously, but only for a short period of one week. The old problem surfaced again.

This time around I have contacted the support team at iRobot, I have got a reply from a person named Justin. He promised to have someone call me on a scheduled time, but that person never called. Later on I have got a voice message saying to call back again. But none, zero, nada has called me or sent me an email.

Supposed this unit is still under warranty, but now I am left with no support, I guess the company just doesn't care any more. Maybe there are too many problems like this?

I bought the unit for $230 at the beginning of the year, now instead of cleaning dust, it is sitting in my living room collecting dust.

I wonder how many units out there are like mine?

I purchased a new Discovery unit about two years ago and a couple of months ago the battery would not charge. I purchased a new battery on line for $45 and still no charge. after much correspondence back and forth with IROBOT service support I was finally told that the unit could not be repaired and they offered to exchange for a replacement unit for $119 plus shipping, plus return of the defective unit (shipping at my expense). I would not purchase another unit and would not recomend this unit.iRobot Roomba 4220 Discovery SE Intelligent Floorvac Vacuuming Robot, Grey
