Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Updated with additional MicroThermal Insulation insulation for greater warmth, the Mammut Stratus Hooded Jacket is light, compressible, and extremely functional for all your mountain endeavors. The MICRO Lite Tex outer shell, that is windproof and highly water-resistant, provides for a jacket that is only 31 oz. in weight, highly compressible, and super packable. An attached helmet compatible hood that is adjustable, is complemented with two handwarmer pockets with hooded zippers and stretch-mesh lining, thumb loop and back-of-hand warmer, and adjustable hem to protect against inclement weather. Functional features include two zip front pockets with elastic net lining and zipper garage, external vertical zippered breast pocket, two spacious inner pockets made of elastic net lining. The jacket stows in its own breast pocket for convenient packability.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really Great Belay Synthetic Jacket!   September 9, 2006
I shopped around for a while for a synthetic belay parka and it was a quick while because everyone directed me to two jackets that set the standard of Belay Parkas The North Face REDPOINT OPTIMUS ($199) for its minimal weight and great packability and the Patagonia DAS PARKA ($265) for its superior warmth, and function.
After playing around with the very flimsly OPTIMUS in the North Face store I decided to spend more and get the obviously warmer DAS PARKA. After a cold weekend in the woods, I found the DAS sleeves in my size fitted too small on me where my wrist would be exposed between the gloves and the cuffs while belaying. After I exchanged it to the next size up, I found it was way too big, loose fitting and too bulky-limiting alot of movement, adding apparent weight and subtracting from the economy of packing less. Also hiking the approach on a 20-30 F degree morning in an bigger-oversized DAS was miserable because the silk-soft exterior-shell was easy to pick up dirt and seemed that it would shred under any type of snag during bushwacking on approach. Plus the tiny zips and imppossibly miniscule hem cinchcord were not glove friendly at all. So I took it back for good when I found a great deal on the MAMMUT STRATUS (on sale for $95.00)at a local shop last winter. The STRATUS fit perfectly on my athletic 5'9", 150 lbs build and is very comfortable and warm whether on approach or at a stationary belay. The shell is the most water repellant of all the Synths and Down Jackets I've worn that is not Gore-Loft. The hood fits over my old school Petzl Ecrin-Roc climbing helmet a little too snug (but that helmet is inherently larger that most newer style helmets).
The thumb loops are an amazing feature that allows you to throw your waterproof shell over the STRATUS quickly without having the sleeves ride up.
In packability I felt is was a little better than the DAS only because the exterior shell fabric of the STRATUS crumples and stuff better and tend to stay folded unlike the slippery silky soft exterior shell fabric of the DAS.
My favorite thing about the STRATUS is it folds easily into its own hood and cinches down with the compression strap on the back hood into a small bundle without having to use a stuff sack.
In warmth is was definately warmer than the OPTIMUS and close to the DAS in warmth. If (as everyone says) the DAS is inherently warmer than the STRATUS on paper you won't notice it in the field.
Also the STRATUS is listed at $165.00 full retail and in my experiences it offers more style, as much warmth, more creative functionality, definately better durability, and packability than its other more costly competitors.

I definately recommend this MAMMUT STRATUS Jacket for someone that is serious about cold weather climbing and winter activities in the outdoors.
